Philosophy

The terroir of La Solitude is a magical combination of natural and human elements.
Here, the plants grow in an area in which every living thing has a role to play: the wildlife and natural vegetation, the vines, and the people. A great wine is created by the vines, without artifice, and tells the story of their setting.

Here the large majority of work is done by hand. The men and women who look after the Estate, with respect for our traditions, all contribute to our quest for excellence. We are proud of what we do, while staying humble and listening to the earth in order to get back to what really matters: preserving and improving what nature has to offer.

Reconnecting with nature

Our plots of wines have been cultivated for centuries, sometimes too harshly, but today they are part of a bigger picture.  The idea of growing vines alone is a thing of the past. Today, our plots are bordered by olive and fruit trees, and bee hives and pastoralism are back to stay.

Ever since, the earth of our Estate is nourished by this diversity and it enriches our wines.

The art of taking time

Our Estate is several hundred years old and time has always passed to the rhythm of the seasons. We consider the future generations by planting vineyards that will produce the great wines of tomorrow. We wait for the grapes to reach optimal ripeness and harvest them according to simple, timeless gestures. We are patient and allow the time necessary to age our wines to perfection, an endeavour that needs to be reinvented year after year, producing great vintages which are a point of communion between different timescales.

HISTORY

The Wine Estate “Domaine de la Solitude” belongs to one of the oldest families of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, whose roots go back to the 15th century. In the 17th century, Hélène BARBERINI, a descendant of the illustrious Tuscan family of the same name, married Claude MARTIN, owner of a vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Their grandson would give a huge boost to “La Solitude” by creating the first label for the Appellation. Thus, “le Vin de la Solitude” became a symbol of quality and began to be exported, allowing a great terroir to come into its own. Eight generations later the Estate is still a family affair and is now run by Florent LANÇON.

THE ESTATE

Some lands seem to be touched by the hand of the gods, and the Domaine de La Solitude is one of them. Fashioned by the sun of Provence and the force of the warm Mistral wind, it is mainly made up of terroirs of safre and rounded pebbles.

La Solitude comprises 37 hectares in A.O.C Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyard is tended according to organic farming principles. The grape types reflect the history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the thirteen traditional varietals are grown in the vineyard.

THE ESTATE

The Estate is divided into 33 parcels. They are planted in 2 areas, 33 ha around the Estate and 4 ha to the north of the AOC. The Estate begins on the plateau of “La Crau”, the high terraces next to the Rhône, and descends into the “Valley of La Solitude”, with its soil of safre, before rising again onto the high terrace of the “Plateau du Boucoup”. Our terroirs are a harmonious mixture of safre and rounded pebbles.

THE ESTATE

In addition to this natural wealth, we are particularly attentive to the plants themselves. If, in a terroir, the soil, the exposure to the elements, and the cultivation techniques play an important role, we should not forget that it is the diversity and the quality of each vine that allows us to transcend the gift that nature offers us. The principal varietals for the red wines are Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, and for the white wines they are Clairette, la Roussanne, and Grenache blanc.
